Mean Calculator

Calculate the arithmetic mean, geometric mean, harmonic mean, or root mean square of a group of numbers.

More about means

The arithmetic mean of a set of numbers is the sum of all numbers divided by the number of numbers. It is the most common type of mean, and is often referred to simply as the mean or average.
The geometric mean of a set of n numbers is the nth root of the product of the numbers, or equivalently, the exponential of the arithmetic mean of the logarithms of the numbers.
The harmonic mean of a set of numbers is the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the reciprocals of the numbers. Harmonic means are used in rates: if someone drives to school/work at 30 miles per hour, and drives back home at 40 miles per hour, their average speed is the harmonic mean of 30 and 40, or 34.2857 miles per hour.
The root mean square of a set of numbers is the square root of the arithmetic mean of the squares of the numbers. Root mean squares are commonly used in electrical engineering. In addition, the standard deviation of a data set is the root mean square of the differences between each value and the mean. The root mean square of any data set is positive, regardless of the signs of the numbers in the data set.

Geometric and harmonic means only apply for sets composed entirely of positive numbers. The geometric mean of any set containing 0 is 0.
